The Eiffel Tower is one of those icons that still thrills me every time it sneaks into my line of vision. Whether from the rue de Belleville in the 19th, the steps of the Panthéon in the 5th, or the bridges on the western end of the Seine, the tower quietly asserts itself from hundreds of vantage points around the city, reminding us of how Paris’ beauty can sneak up on you at any moment. I would argue that the tower is at its most stunning at night when it is glittering against the blackened sky. Anyone who has ever crossed one of Paris’ bridges to suddenly look up and witness the shimmering lights can attest to the undeniable magic of that moment—however clichéd it might be.

This year, the Eiffel Tower turns 120 years old. In celebration, the tower will have the first of its new light shows beginning October 22 at 8pm. The display will last 12 minutes (one minute for each decade the tower has stood) and will repeat every night for the next three months.

Those in Paris should make a point to witness the real thing, but even our international readers can partake in the spectacle. The French car company Citroen will position 10 cars around the tower (each equipped with a camera to capture the action from a different angle), and the show will be broadcast on the company’s site: www.toureiffel.citroen.com

Make sure to tune in to watch the lights, you will be glad you did.
